Thank You For the Music!

Sweden + exercise = swedercise!

What is swedercise you ask? It is the quite simply the most fun you’ll ever have while working out.

A massive success in Sweden and France, the Swedish gym organization Friskis and Svettis, have been running swedercise classes in London since 2005. Recently, they have increased their classes from five a week to seven, and there’s talk of adding more!

But what exactly is swedercise? In short, it’s 60 minutes of exercise, designed by experts in medicine and physiology, to the beat of music. Sometimes the music is Swedish, but mostly it’s good old pop and upbeat tunes that make you want to jump around. Classes are taught in groups (usually around 20-30 people) with one instructor. The group form a circle around the instructor and follow as they enthusiastically jump, thrust, punch, skip, bend, and more – all with a giant smile on their face.

Each class follows a special intensity curve consisting of warm-up, flexibility, strength, stamina, cool-down and relaxation and burns approximately 600 calories.

Currently classes are being offered at the Swedish Church near Edgware Road, the YMCA by Tottenham Court Road or at movingartsbase near Angel. For more information go to the Friskis website

For anyone looking to update their workout, I can highly recommend coming down to sweat and smile Swedish style.
